Open Source Identity Selector (OSIS)
Context: since about February this year, a number of companies have been exploring the possibility of an open-source identity selector (aka "Open-Source InfoCard")
Current status: hard work getting the legal foundation so the project can do what it needs to do.
- Hardest task is just getting open source identity selector on different platforms
- Duplicate MS Vista etc. selection app
- Right now narrowly focused onto binary apps on multiple platforms
- Agreeing on minimal level of interoperability
- e.g. sharing test cases
- Intention is that there are extensibility mechanisms
- Also, basic functionality which is universal, ubiquitous
- Licensing proposal from MS will likely be less restrictive than anything before -- e.g. like similar licenses from IBM and Sun
- Be clear: part of the process was that the InfoCards system CAN be cloned -- no IP encumbrance
- Schema owned by MS? In discussion, perhaps move claims to somewhere else?
- Can still extend...KC -- our implementation won't choke on schema extensions
- As much code sharing as possible -- between all these projects
- The Lunching of the Lawyers has begun (process of figuring out license details -- which open source license?)
- People that want to be involved, step in and have their legal representatives take part
- metadata elasticity -- just use URIs
- Had extensive conversations with organizations (e.g. Apache, etc.) -- easier to set up a simple group, a legally fundable entity -- oversight by the people putting the money in
- Long discussion on whether working with existing organization would be better -- view was that the funded entity needs to be separate, want to show trust in deeds
- Elephant in the room -- Higgins vs. InfoCard; is it a vs.? Both work together? Use an open process
- Define the full stack of components and how they work together
- Competitive vs. overlapping
- figure out how to map the components between Higgins and InfoCards
